Physical Exams
What is a physical exam?
A physical exam is a routine test in which Dr. Raccuglia feels, examines, or listens to various parts of your body to:
- Detect certain diseases or medical conditions
- Determine whether you need further testing
- Screen for your risk of certain medical problems
- Check for changes in your current health
To maintain your health and prevent disease, Dr. Raccuglia recommends coming into his office for a physical exam at least once a year.
Are there different types of physical exams?
Dr. Raccuglia offers several types of physical exams for children and adults. These include:
Sports physical
A sports physical is an exam that helps determine whether you’re physically fit and healthy enough to play certain sports, like soccer, basketball, or hockey. Most states require children and teens to have a sports physical before beginning a new season.
After reviewing your child’s medical history and any medications they’re currently taking, Dr. Raccuglia will:
- Record your child’s height and weight
- Test your child’s vision
- Take vitals such as blood pressure and pulse
- Check your child’s ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen
Dr. Raccuglia also checks your child’s joint and muscle flexibility, as well as their strength.
School physical
Most schools now require a physical exam before students start the school year. These exams allow you and Dr. Raccuglia to make sure your child is on the right development track for their age. During a school exam, Dr. Raccuglia will:
- Record your child’s height and weight
- Take vitals such as blood pressure and pulse
- Check your child’s ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen
- Test your child’s vision
- Assess your child’s family and medical history
- Check to make sure your child is up to date on necessary vaccinations
If your child is missing any mandatory vaccinations before school starts, Dr. Raccuglia will administer them at the appointment.
